God sent Pa Elton here to come and manage the Aladura revival. He was very much involved in the Babalola movement, which later became the C.A.C. God gave him (Babalola) a vision of a bottle of liquid and a rod and he interpreted the liquid to mean water and the rod as something he was to be carrying about. But Pa Elton told him that the liquid represents the level of his anointing and the rod, his authority. Later, he had to pull out of denominational limitations when it was debarring him from doing fully what he believed God was leading him to do.
Pa Elton was an administrator to a lot of guys. He determined the constitution of many Churches. At a time when Christianity was growing but without a corresponding depth, Elton started to teach on gifts, prophetically. He was using his prophetic teaching to affect us. Christians at that time were not developing; they weren’t going into business, academics and things like that. He was the one that God used to re-orientate a lot of people. Then, to see Christians going into Law was abnormal. He was also very influential in the British Embassy. All he needed to do if you were going to the Embassy is to give you his card they will give you visa and with that, he sent so many people abroad. There is virtually no man of God today who he didn’t affect in one-way or the other, Idahosa, Kumuyi - name it; we all grew under his feet. He even decided to tell us how many children we should have. When I told him I wanted four, he said, “You are going to have to be an evangelist to your family first before you can evangelise the world”. I told him that was exactly what I wanted. If you were going to walk with him, he would tell you he didn’t want more than two children. So that was how deep his influence on us was. He taught us that women should be keepers at home. We did it when we were raising children; my wife was at home for 10 years.
And I don’t believe he was to the extreme. If Papa Elton had not brought in a strong check, Christianity would have been completely dead today, totally powerless and unproductive. We would not have been in academics, oil industry, or politics. I would have left academics at 300 level. Christianity would have had no value. Today, we have church halls everywhere, print media - it was Elton’s idea. Pa Elton was the one who spearheaded the publications ministry. He demanded that people should establish printing presses because according to him, they were very relevant.
To walk with Pa Elton, you must have a vision and it must not be what you concocted from your head. He believes so much in recognizing your call and staying with that call. The problem was that at that time everybody was rushing into full-time ministry and they were abandoning their studies and so on.
He also had problems with American ministries, because American ministries then were into all what Nigerian ministries are doing today, which will distract you. Pa Elton was however more interested in building lives than structures. He had levels of relationship with all of us. Some were sitting-room relationship, some, bedroom, and some toilet relationships. Those sitting-room relationships are the ones that come to him for books and tapes and that’s all. We went far beyond that. We were the toilet people. This was how Pa Elton’s anointing influenced us.
