Men of God speak about the influence of Pa S.G. Elton. (Excerpts from Essence Restored Magazine maiden edition 2004)

CAET is an interdenominational group which since inception was privileged to share ministry with Pa Elton. Some of the things we’re holding onto today were from the understandings he passed to us. He was very significant in “Operation Good News” in Ibadan at that time 1982/83. He brought in an evangelist and the whole church in Ibadan came together to organize the crusade, Ibadan was grouped into 7 zones and we spent 3 weeks in each zone. It was a great revival; there were genuine conversions and miracles. Those were the legacies he passed on to us. And in matter of principle, Pa Elton was more of a father. He was always there for our Marriage Conferences and other special programmes. I remember in 1985, he staged a meeting called ‘Blow the Trumpet’. That meeting was an eye opener for us to what the role of CAET should be in the end-time because when we were battling with whether CAET should become a church or not, he was the one that made us to understand that CAET should be more of a service ministry that acts as a catalyst to help the Church fulfil the Great Commission. So we cannot divorce Pa Elton from what CAET is today.

It is not that he was out rightly against the starting of churches. When you look into the scripture, you will see that there is a Babylon. The spirit of Babylon has crept into the Church. Today, we have many people who claim to be Christians and even part of the ministry but are not genuinely converted. There was a time Pa Elton was ministering and he said, “Go to Ilesha. Every compound is now a church”. You know how this came to be?

You know; he came as a missionary in The Apostolic Church, which encouraged small groups. This was what the people imbibed but not the spirit of the faith. So everybody went to his backyard and started one Aladura Church or C.A.C. - and when Papa saw this trend he knew that there was danger in it. His own projection was that there is a small company - the remnant company. He used to say that in every move of God, there’s always a remnant company who will understand the mind of God, pursue it until God does what He wants to do and that principle is all over Scripture. Even among the disciples of the Lord, there was an inner three. So going back to why he was very cautious about starting churches, when you see a man who has the grace of an evangelist, don’t turn him to be a pastor. That was all he was after.

Pa Elton saw himself as an apostle to the entire Body of Christ and once he agreed to pitch a tent here, he would be tied to a single denomination. That was why he left The Apostolic Church in the first place, so that he could preach the New Testament. There were things he wanted to preach which the church did not agree with. I see him as he one who introduced the teaching on the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit. And so by remaining as an apostle, he was able to minister to entire Body and you do see people coming from all over the nation to be mentored by him. Archbishop B. A. Idahosa was mentored by him. He was even the one that linked him with T.L. Osborn because he (Elton) was Osborn’s representative in Nigeria. Papa was a mentor. That was his passion - to mentor young people.
